SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) — the South Charleston Recreation Center is closed Monday after flood waters hit early Saturday morning.

According to an employee, the damage couldn’t be assessed until the water started receding on Monday.

Mayor Frank Mullens tells WSAZ.com it could be two or three weeks before the rec center completely re-opens.

Mullens says the city has a flood plan in place so when something like this happens crews are ready to respond. that keeps the damage minimal, Mullens said.

Under the plan, furniture, equipment, supplies and the portable basketball floor are moved upstairs.

Mayor Mullens tells WSAZ.com the city is going to take advantage of the down time and spruce up the rec center. the city has planned to make some improvements for a while and now there’s time to do it, Mullens said.

The city plans to do a lot of painting and replace some of the bathroom tiles during the next two weeks.

Mayor Mullens says he hopes the fitness center will re-open in the next few days.

As of Monday afternoon, the rec center was still without power. an employee says they have the telephones working off generators.
